Looking for one book to put the American experience in world-historical perspective?

That one book with such interesting insights it would renew your enthusiasm for the past, rejunenate your teaching, and spark a love for American history in your students? Russell Kirk’s masterpiece, The Roots of American Order, is one of the most sigificant and enduring histories of the United States ever written. For a quarter of a century now, this book has helped readers understand what it is to be American, and what it means to live in “ordered freedom.”

The Roots of American Order is not traditional textbook, but is packed with fascination stories and insights about the distant origins of our American way of life. Kirk imaginatively presents the material by taking readers on a “tour” of such great cities as Jerslem, Athens, Rome, London, and Philadelphia. By the last page, you will better see what Cicero, Diocletian, Moses, Socrates, St. Sugustine, and Martin Luther have to do with American history, and be introduced to Americans that many traditional textbooks overlook. (For example, Orestes Brownson’s most famous line, “Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” was picked up---but not attributed--- by John F. Kennedy in his first inaugural address.)

All various ways of ordering our lives---moral, intellectual, poltical, economic---came together in a wonderful way in the founding of America. Kirk’s thesis, simply put, is that it is these many different orders that make American freedom possible---our ordered freedom
