Center for the American Idea - Staff

Reginald Johnson is currently the Director of Educational Programs at the Center for the American Idea in Houston, Texas.  From the attainment of his Masters Degree in Political Philosophy from the University of Dallas, through over sixteen years of experience in education, both in the classroom and in administration, Mr. Johnson has journeyed through the realms of Catholic, Classical, private/independent, and public education to his current position as the Director of Educational Programs at the Center for the American Idea.  An acknowledged authority on classical education, Mr. Johnson has spent his career honing his approach to bringing this once revered type of education into the modern classroom.

Over the course of his teaching career, Mr. Johnson has educated middle and high school students in Latin at all levels, from beginning through AP.  He has also taught Religion, Greek, Mathematics, Ancient, British, Modern, and American Literature, Humanities, Philosophy, and Ancient, Mexican, European, Latin American, Medieval, and U.S. History.  Looking at one of Mr. Johnson’s syllabi is akin to viewing a college level syllabus, but Mr. Johnson adheres to the philosophy that students will perform to a teacher’s expectations.  He has no preconceived notions of his student’s abilities; he presents the material to them in an engaging and exciting manner, and they are gifted with a classroom experience unlike any they have ever undergone.

As an administrator, Mr. Johnson has served in several varied capacities, undertaking virtually every aspect of educational management.  He has headed English, Latin, and History and Fine & Performing Arts Departments, with responsibilities for everything from reviving formerly defunct programs, to designing curricula, to working with teachers both on classroom management and in a mentoring capacity.  As an Assistant Head of School and as a Principal, Mr. Johnson has hired and evaluated teachers and staff, overseen budget development, raised funds, and revamped and implemented entirely new curriculum programs.

Mr. Johnson’s experience with students is not limited to primary and secondary school.  He has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Government at Tarrant County College.  Mr. Johnson’s experience is not even limited to American schools.  He also functions as the Director of Curriculum Development and Implementation for the Kurdish American School in Iraq, and is responsible both for curriculum development and for preparing faculty for curriculum delivery to Iraqi citizens.
